The concept was created in 1996 by Professors Johan Roos and Bart Victor when they both were professors at IMD in Switzerland. Around the same time Lego® were experiencing a downturn in business as video games became popular. Lego® used Lego® Serious Play® to turn the business around and later decided to make the methodology open source

The science behind Lego® Serious Play® is based on Piaget’s theory of Constructivism and Papert and Harel’s theory of Constructionism. In a recent research paper written for the University of Chester, we at Transformation Space, mapped Lego® Serious Play® methodology with the theories mentioned above to Barner and Barner framework for Building Better Teams

At it’s core, LSP is a systematic method that enables people to use Lego® to solve problems, explore ideas and achieve objectives. Ideally we would used mixed approaches. Participants will build models according to clear guidelines, the facilitator will provide some underpinning context both before and after models are constructed, this could be sharing news or training of some type. Participants will be given time to reflect and action plan insights gained.

Yes, this is a crucial element which is why it is important to have an initial scoping discussion with your facilitator so that we can explore the ‘what’ and ‘why’ and then design the session to your needs. Although we have delivered countless sessions, each group has slight nuances that require careful thought if they are to experience the right impact and outcome.
